Port Nolloth to Alexander Bay

We  left Port Nolloth early the next morning… it was misty and cooler than the day before. We did not know what to expect and the feeling of excitement was overwhelming. Bruno and Junior also showed some eagerness and barked – uttering their opinion!

While traveling along, we spotted Antelope.  This one was standing all alone, staring at us passing by….

This catchy name reminded us that it was time to stop and stretch our legs.

this says it all...

The road to Alexander Bay.

This long road, along the barren coast line, lay ahead of us….

Closer to Alexander Bay, the landscape is a continues mining wasteland.

As we got closer, we could  see the sea again…

From here not much further to town…

we're here!

we’re here!

After traveling a distance of +/-84km, we arrived at Alexander Bay!  We were very exited but also a little bit concern, that Bruno & Junior might not be allowed in.

Just outside town, we filled up with fuel.

Once again we’re about to enter a security controlled town.  We had to sign the registrar and present our ID documents.  Bruno and Junior were welcomed tourists and we received a day pass.

This signboard announced that we were almost at the Orange River Mouth. From here we followed a dirt road all along the fence. The closer you get to the mouth, the softer the sand.  A 4×4 is definitely necessary for this route. We traveled +/-8km to the mouth.

On our way to the river mouth, we saw some activity in the restricted mining area.

Many moons ago, this “lookout” must have being standing upright…over the years the elements have taken their toll.

We passed this brilliant fishing spot on our way to the Orange River Mouth. A few eager fisherman were busy with their “catch of the day”.

There is a variety of bird-life in the estuary – especially flamingos.

The area is scattered with wood! If we had more space, I surely would have claimed a few artistic pieces.  Unfortunately I had to be happy with three small driftwood pieces and a shell or two….

As we followed the jeep tracks to the river mouth, the sand got softer and softer…ooohhhh SO MUCH FUN!

Here we are at the Orange River Mouth.  The Orange river forms the boundary between South Africa and Namibia.

back in town

After a very enjoyable 4×4 drive, we went back to town. The town is a typical mining town with the bare necessities.

Our last stop, before we left this incredible town…

IMG_4710_1Good Bye Alexander Bay …we’ll be back for that extra piece of driftwood and a picnic next to the river!
